Is UWL_SERVICE needed for UWL?

Is UWL_SERVICE needed to leverage full UWL functionality?

As of now, all RFC destinations (that correspond to UWL Connectors; <system alias>$<uwl connector type>) are configured to authenticate with a technical user other than UWL_SERVICE--let's call it SAP_UWL.  SAP_UWL exists in all backend systems.  I've read that this is fine so long as the Portal service user, UWL_SERVICE, is mapped to backend account SAP_UWL, and that SAP_UWL has role SAP_BC_UWL_SERVICE.

Is this the case?  When looking at function module source code in the backend, there are checks for account UWL_SERVICE...
