API to replicate Portal search functionality

Hi Experts,

I need to integrate the portal search(which appears in masthead) with the sharepoint. Is there any API available through which I can replicate the functionality of portal search. I tried using PCDSearchControls API to achieve the same but the results returned by it were different from the results returned by standard Portal search.

I am working on NW 7.31.
