Excel files not opening from File Repository Object in Internet Explorer, but works in Firefox

Hi.

I am hoping someone could assist me.

I have a File Repository object (BOBJSHARE) defined in our Portal, this links to a share on our network which contains certain information in excel format.

From our HR Manager role, these files are configured as hyperlinks.

Opening these hyperlinks using Firefox, works perfectly.

But doing exactly the same in Internet Explorer 8, 9, 10 and 11; It does not open the files, nothing happens when you click Open after clicking the hyperlink.

This is an example of the hyperlinks:

I managed to get an error message displayed on a different computer:
"Access to this web server is disabled by default because it is controlled by basic authentication and does not use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL)"

We do not have SSL set up for this purpose, however I don't think it is necessary to have SSL for this.

What could the issue be, and how would I go about fixing it?

P.S.

I have made changes to the registry as a test, on my machine, and this somewhat resolved the matter for myself.

However, if opening in IE, it allows me to edit the locally saved files.  If opening in Firefox, it opens in "Read-Only" mode like it is supposed to, so I am not sure if this is the correct way either.

Step 1:

To enable Basic authentication on the client computer, follow these steps:

  1. In Windows Vista or Windows 7, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press Enter.

In Windows 8, hold the Windows key (WINKEY) + F, highlight Apps in the Menu bar, type regedit in the Search box, and then press Enter.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters

  1. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  2. Type BasicAuthLevel, and then press Enter.
  3. Right-click BasicAuthLevel, and then click Modify.
  4. In the Value data box, type 2, and then click OK.

Note The mapping is as follows:
    0 - Basic authentication disabled
1 - Basic authentication enabled for SSL connections only
2 - Basic authentication enabled for SSL and non-SSL connections
  5. Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.

  Step 2:

On the client computer, add the BasicAuthLevel registry key and an appropriate value. To do this, follow these steps.

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

  1. Start Registry Editor.
    • In Windows 8, hold the Windows key (WINKEY) + F, highlight Apps in the Menu bar, type regedit in the Search box, and then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
    • In Windows 7 or in Windows Vista, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, then press Enter. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or provide confirmation.
    • In Windows XP, click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:

    For Office 2010

  HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\14.0\Common\Internet

For Office 2013

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Common\Internet

1 - Basic authentication enabled for SSL connections only
2 - Basic authentication enabled for SSL and for non-SSL connections

Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
